«Mostobud» is the leader in bridge construction in Ukraine and CIS

The Ukrainian Open Joint Stock Company “Mostobud” is the leader in bridge construction in Ukraine and CIS. The head office is situated in Kiev. Recently the company has put into operation the new bridge over the Kiev Harbour, the first pilot object of the unique project of the out-of-class Podol bridge crossing over the Dnepr River.

The chairman of the Supervisory Board of ‘Mostobud”, Professor Volodymyr Prodyvus describes the history, objects, possibilities and development prospects of the company.


Traditions of professionalism

The history of “Mostobud” dates back to the years of the World War II, when bridge-building teams as the part of army field forces erected bridges under fire and actually even broke world records. Here is one of the examples. In 1943 there was a strong need to rebuilt Darnytskyi Bridge over the Dnepr River, which had been destroyed by the retreating German army. The construction went on day and night, at the speed of 81.5 m per day, while being bombed all the time. Just in 13 days the first tanks went over the bridge from the left bank of the river to the right. The world had never seen something like that before. (For comparison: in America, where bridge construction traditionally is at its best, at that time bridges were constructed at the speed of 56.4 m per day).

The company was founded in 1945. In 1993 bridge construction trust was reorganized into the Open Joint Stock Company.

Almost all bridge constructions in Ukraine have been built by “Mostobud” or with its assistance. For 60 years the company has been working without any complaints from clients. Over 5000 objects have been erected in Ukraine by our means so far. Among them are operating Kiev bridges, overhead crossings, viaducts in Dnepropetrovsk, Kherson, Nikolaev and other regions of the country, more than 1.1 thousand railway bridges (over 55 kilometers), over 4 thousand road bridges and overhead crossings (over 120 kilometers).

Constructions erected by our company are successfully used not only in Ukraine, but also in the former Soviet states (including Polar Regions, Baikal-Amur line), Angola, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, Finland and the Czech Republic. Many contracts about bridge construction have been signed in other countries.

The international level of “Mostobud” corporate management quality is supported by DSTU ISO 9001:2001 certificate that equals to the international quality certificate ISO 9001:2000.


State economic growth priority

Transnational arteries cross Ukraine from west to east, from north to south. This creates peculiar responsibilities and vast opportunities for economic growth. Therefore construction of new bridges and maintenance of existing ones are an extremely important task for our country. About half a million automobiles go over the Dnepr bridges daily. It exceeds the calculated norm by 2.3-2.5 times. The situation in the regions is even more strained. Therefore the domestic market of bridge construction is developed, essential and stable.

In his first radio message to the citizens of the country the president of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko determined construction of new bridges as one of the priority projects of the state. This task was particularly emphasized due to the preparation to the Football Championship EURO 2012.

OJSC “Mostobud” is confidently leading in implementing of this strategic policy.


From planning to setting into operation

For the years of its existence the Open Joint Stock Company has gained unique experience in planning, building and reconstructing of bridge constructions of any complexity all over the world, in severe climate conditions of Polar Regions and hot Africa.

The presence of the equipped with modern technology and software Design Bureau and professional and skilled staff in the company structure allow carrying out especially complicated calculations quickly, offering new and unique projects of steel and ferroconcrete bridge constructions of any complexity and planning according to the Euro-codes, the bridge construction norms of the USA and Russia. “Mostobud” offers high quality colour printing and animation to demonstrate projects to its customers.

Mechanization control and 11 universal mobile bridge-teams with their own specialists and equipment, deployed across all Ukraine, enable to focus powerful industrial forces on the most important objects and to react flexibly to region inquiries. Thus each bridge-team can carry out all bridge construction works independently.

In reply to the market conditions the company’s structure is developing dynamically. Recently one of our bridge-teams has been reorganized into road-building division. It will carry out construction of roads, pavements, approach tracks to bridges, asphalting, roadway repair, etc.

“Mostobud” is the company with the hundred percent national capital. When a new young command of investors came in 2003, the joint stock company began to develop rapidly. Against the year 2002 today's “Mostobud” has increased the amount of works by 9 times, the number of employees has grown almost twofold, and average wages (including those in regions) have increased by 3 times and now are almost the same as in the capital city. Over 5 thousand bridge builders work hard on the most important national and foreign projects.

The program of vocational training and retraining of specialists has been introduced. At the expenses of the Joint Stock Company young perspective workers are trained in specialized higher educational institutions, and then practice in production units where they will work after their graduation.

“Mostobud” shareholders steadily increase investments into innovative technologies and renovation of technopark. Since 2002 such investments have increased by more than 3 times.

“Mostobud” development strategy arranges its development independently of price force majeure. We can overcome annual growth dynamics by two times. We understand that under the conditions when prices are dictated by suppliers it is hard to maintain production profitability and increase specialists’ earnings. For this reason we consider acquiring of quarries where we will be able to get raw materials for our own construction materials plants. We will provide ourselves with high quality modern and cheaper materials.


Company’s business card – reliability, quality and durability

“Mostobud” possesses the most modern technologies and equipment that allow building high quality objects reliably and quickly.

It is impossible to enumerate all bridge constructions erected by the company. It is enough to look at the map of Ukraine to make sure that our country is densely intersected by water obstacles. The banks of wide rivers and small rivers are bridged by the hands of our specialists. Bridge constructions over autobahns and highways, underpasses and viaducts were also erected by the bridge builders.

Today the company as the main contractor is simultaneously carrying out 2 extremely complicated tasks – it is building the out-of-class Podol bridge crossing over the Dnepr and the highway to Zaporozhe over the Dnepr.

The Podol bridge crossing will become the largest among the 6 existing bridges over the Dnepr River in Kiev. It will resolve severe transport problems of more than half a million kievans as it will connect the right bank part of the city with Obolon and left bank Troyeshchina and Voskresenka by the highway, it will ease down other bridges and connect the city centre with the left bank by another underground line. The lower layer of this bridge crossing will be used for Podolsko-Voskresenska underground line, the upper is intended for three-lane traffic in both directions. The total length of the crossing is 7.5 km, including 6 bridges and 4 overhead roads. The setting of the object in operation is planned for 2010. “Mostobud” rigidly observes the construction schedule and is even ready to launch the bridge crossing earlier in case of more intense financing and securing of the front.

“Mostobud” won the tender to build the highway to Zaporozhe among national and foreign companies. Two parallel cable-stayed bridges with three-lane traffic in both directions will be soon erected over the Dnepr in Zaporozhe. The length of the highway will make up 9.1 kilometers, including the bridges over the main and the old Dnepr river-beds with the length of 660 and 340 meters. About 90 % of the highway will go through already existing highways and railways and will be elevated on high supports. So it won’t cause any damage to the historical part of the island Khortitsa and its ecology. According to the expert estimation the time people from the bedroom community (over 300 thousand people) spend to get to the administrative industrial centre of the city will decrease from 1.5-2 hours to 20-30 minutes.

From there we get exclusively high quality well tubes with the diameter of 620, 800 and 1500 millimeters that are used in bridge constructions.

On the 26 February, 2008 the Ukrainian OJSC “Mostobud” and the American Company The Sun Land Group Corp. signed the agreement about financial assistance and management of traffic infrastructure construction projects in Ukraine to the amount of 7 thousand million dollars.

In order to implement this agreement the partners agreed to set up the international consortium and register it in Ukraine. Given good will, under terms of the underlying agreement, contracts about construction of particular objects can be concluded in the nearest months. In this project the interests of the state and society as the customer objectively coincided with the possibilities of “Mostobud” as the contractor and Sun Land Group Corp. as the financial instrument. There is obviously a great need in construction of new highways with modern bridges in Ukraine and there are “Mostobud” that is capable of using by 5 time more resources and the Sun Land Group Corp. ready to find 7 thousand million dollars for construction.
